H7 Story: Team Bash Ball # 1
In sports, when someone hits some sort of career milestone or they have a particularly amazing game, they often will get the “game ball” as recognition for exceptional performance. We do the same each year to recognize an FCCer’s outstanding dedication to Serve on the Team. So we give them a game ball signed by all the Staff and Elders and then we all cheer and yell and scream and create a ridiculous FCC hullabaloo!!!
Each football has 1 Peter 4:10 on it: Use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace. And then it says, “Thank you for being a faithful steward.”
Team Code Maxim #1 says, “We enjoy the fellowship of mutual surrender to the mission.” This basically means, a person who loves and serves because they love God, and this year’s ball went to Bill Richards.
If you’ve been to FCC for any length of time, you have probably seen Bill. Hill tall stature and curvy mustache are the things of legends around these parts. Pastor Bob Radank explained why Bill is so special when he said, “Bill Richards exemplifies what it means to multiply influence by reproducing leaders. He is so influential in mentoring so many people and his gracious, discerning attitude is guided by the Word and glorying the Savior. When we say we help people find and follow Jesus, Bill Richards replicates this the best!”
Bill himself shared that, “The church has been a huge part of my life since childhood. No matter where I have been in this world, several states and two foreign countries, the church has been the place that has welcomed and cared for me. God has blessed me with opportunities to be a useful part of his kingdom regardless of where I was at any given time. His faithfulness is amazing.”
When asked what he most loves about serving, Bill first highlighted getting to work with young people. He explained, “Serving with and getting to know the young people I serve with each Sunday is a marvelous blessing. They serve in every capacity with enthusiasm and commitment that sometimes puts us adults to shame. A story I love to repeat is a father finding his son who was sick crying on Sunday morning and when asked what was wrong, he declared “I don't want to miss serving at church. My faith is strengthened and I am in awe of God's work in young lives.”
He also highlighted his joy in getting to meet first-time guests. He shares that their personal stories of god’s Spirit leading them too FCC in unexpected ways – or that they just found us online – are always interesting. “It is so awesome when they become regular worshipers and maybe a new friend. The experience offers a constant reminder of God's work in people's lives and His power to call and change us into His body that continually grows his kingdom.”
Bill concluded by saying, “It is always humbling to be known and given opportunity to serve by the great God of all creation.”
