Tell the Story: Scripture Memory As a Church
You’ve probably heard it said that the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Even if you haven’t realized it, each Sunday we have been taking a bite out of the elephant of Bible memorization as we recite God’s Word together in each service.
Recently someone began keeping track of all the verses we have memorized with each series since our multisite launch in 2019. We have memorized verses from 18 books of the Bible— 9 Old Testament books and 9 New Testament books. (We don’t like to show favoritism around here.)
Despite having more than one campus, we are all reciting the same verses as one body each Sunday morning. It is unifying and uplifting. What a sweet-smelling offering it must be to the Lord everytime we say His Words back to Him!
So— how many verses do you think we have collectively memorized? The number might surprise you. We started small with one or two per month, and as of July 2022, we have put 38 verses to memory!
It turns out that Bible memorization is simply repetition and consistency. With truly little effort on our part, we can memorize verses the way we would a song on the radio or a commercial tagline, just by exposure.
And, by practicing the first of our seven FCC habits, Engage in Worship, we can show up weekly to bring praise to the Lord and leave with His Word hidden in our hearts. The Bible is a large, comprehensive book, but it need not be intimidating. We just take it one bite at a time.
