Scott's Thoughts: Sun Aug 7, 2022

Total Reading Time: 10(ish) mins (acc to wordcounter.net.) Yes it’s relatively long today, but it’s very important.

An Uncomfortable Post-Covid Thought: As a Church, Our Vision is God’s Glory, We Don’t Sit Around and Wait for People to Become Comfortable With That Vision, and It’s Time to Decide What That Means For You. – This is an uncomfortable post-Covid thought because most folks are tired of the stresses of the last 2.5 years and if there’s anybody they don’t want to hear asking for more sacrifice, it’s their Pastor! Believe me, I get it. I am tired of it, too. I’m “over it” times however many days 2.5 years make. In fact, bring on the germs. Shake my hand. Cough in my face. Put your snot on my sleeve.

But, as I said in a recent Scott’s Thoughts (ST), Greene County will have to be iced over or under siege in war before I, for one, am okay with canceling our services again. Corporate worship is essential. Period.

Go ahead… Arrest me. Fire me. Mutter to yourself about how you think I’m a reckless leader. Talk bad to me among your friends and family. Make what may seem to you and all the algorithms like reasonable medical, scientific, philosophical, and moral arguments as to why I’m wrong.

I don’t care.

And I’m not kidding.

And I am now fully persuaded of—and absolutely willing to die for—this conviction: Outside of our church’s leaders and the Word of God, I will not allow any virus, person, “expert,” or government—local or federal—tell me what to do in how I lead and Pastor this congregation. I have too often been guilty of fearing man in how I lead as Pastor, but I’m here, now, publicly repenting, and I’m doubling down on my resolve to lead with strength in a world that more desperately needs the church than it knows. If we as Christians are not willing to suffer and die for the sake of Christ and the gospel, not only is our declaration of faith empty, but we are consigning the world around us to even more suffering and pain. When we do not lay down our lives in sacrifice for the world like Christ, the community around us suffers.

If there’s anything I’ve learned in 25 years of ministry and that the last 2.5 years have made clearer than ever, it’s that there is nothing more important to the future health and flourishing of our kids, marriages, families, community, and nation than the church’s corporate commitment to God’s vision for living as a unified witness to His glory! It’s more important than education, vocation, travel sports, keeping selfish peace in your marriage and family, and being liked. And no, of course some of those things aren’t mutually exclusive with being faithful witnesses and I don’t say this to devalue them. Some of them are good things—even gifts from God and I enjoy them, too—but God didn’t call, renew, and empower you, for example, as parents, to prepare your kids for societal success at the expense of their souls. He has commissioned you as a parent and Christian—and us as a church—to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything Christ has commanded (Matt 28:19-20). If we don’t stay focused on God’s ultimate goals and purposes, they will easily be replaced by selfish idolatry and peacekeeping that are personal contentment with evil.

So, frankly, we as a church are not going to sit around waiting for you to ease into a lazy comfort with what is crystal clear in God’s Word: You were created for right relationship with Him for eternity and your ultimate purpose in this life isn’t developing your kingdom at the expense of witnessing to God’s glory! This stuff matters. More than anything else. And it’s for the sake of your soul, kids, spouse, family, and even the community and world around you, that you take up God’s Kingdom cause as the preeminent concern in this life. Why?! Because He’s not waiting either. I mean, have you read Revelation?! God isn’t Lord someday. He is truly Lord today.

Friends, the next two months are an important moment of decision. We’ve purchased the equipment, committed over $300,000 to this vision, have staffed toward this end for an entire year, have seen God bless us with new blood and committed believers ready to work, and we believe God has led us to this next step of faith. If you haven’t yet decided, it’s time to decide how God is calling you and your family to respond. Are you in or are you out? If you’re out because you want an easier church that doesn’t challenge you to personal growth and doesn’t need to ask for your sacrifice, go for it—there are plenty to choose from. While we at FCC have plenty of problems that need to be fixed, you can be sure of this: It is over my dead body that this church stops working hard to be an environment that is crazy good at helping the lost, unborn, babies, kids, students, orphans, young adults, singles, the addicted, single moms, marrieds, widows, and seniors all over Greene County know Christ and grow in Him. And we aren’t going to wallow in cultural frustration and sit around waiting for you or Covid to say yes to Christ’s commission to proclaim the gospel. When you said yes to Christ as Lord, you said yes to His mission and vision for your life.

So… please…
  • Pray—for your heart, for our motivations as a church, for the lost in our community, and for God to make clear how you are positioned to help build His Kingdom here in Greene County.
  • Participate–It’s time to commit to a campus. It’s time to financially contribute. It’s time to say yes to regular worship and serving. Right now we most need help in Kids Min, but we’ve got a place for you no matter what your gifts and interests.
  • Promote–It’s time to invite your neighbors, friends, and family. Who do you know who needs the gospel? We’ll soon be providing everyone with yard signs, stickers, and t-shirts to make sure everyone knows we’re here to help them have a forever relationship with Christ that grows and bears fruit in the lives of others.

My Calling and Role as Lead Pastor, Great Questions Answered, and a Forewarning – If you’ll indulge me, I need to talk about myself for a minute. As far back as 1987, in my freshman year of high school, I could tell something was wrong because, unlike middle school, there were suddenly more than a few of my teachers who seemed to delight in proving that conservative Christian kids like me were clueless and unintelligent plebeians that needed a thorough secular reeducation.

This wasn’t “playing devil’s advocate” to stretch our thinking. This was ”Jesus was just a human” and “the Bible is just a human-authored and error-ridden myth,” and it was occasionally to the point of mockery—“I don’t understand how anybody could believe in the flying spaghetti monster that you call ‘God.’” At the time I figured it was better just to lay low and do my best to get good grades, outachieve my peers, and “let my life be the witness,” which is often Christianese for “never stand up for what you believe.”

But I knew even then that something was broken that would need more fixing than my silent witness. I knew that, eventually, trusting in God and in His Word as the truth about Him would have to mean standing up for said truth with actual words that made reasonable arguments that could stand up to such scrutiny.1

So I’ve known for a good 35 years this moment would eventually come. And frankly, in the name of supposedly being nice, I’ve tried to avoid this for as long as I thought was wise, but I can’t anymore. It has become a personal moral incongruity I can’t ignore. I’ve seen and experienced too many relationships and media moments that glorify and normalize what is contrary to God’s good intent for all of His world—non-Christians included—such that to remain silent is not wisdom, tolerance, nor love, but lack of courage and failure to trust in Jesus’ claims.

So, on vacation a couple weeks ago, I decided that, no matter the personal consequences, it’s time for me as Lead Pastor of fccgreene.org to come out of the closet as so freakishly in love with Christ and beholden to the timeless truths of God’s Word that to not communicate Christ’s Lordship over all of life and the Bible’s sufficiency for all made in God’s image is tantamount to disqualification from ministry.2

For example, for the last 15 years I’ve been reading and studying about the rapid rise of godless and lawless ideologies masked as tolerance in academia and in some coastal states and big cities. But it’s here, now, on our turf, and I am not okay with it. Until the Lord tells me to chill out, I’m going to more publicly and explicitly fight against the fruitless and harmful ideologies in our community that threaten its current and future health.

The last straw was hearing about how yet another child from one of our church’s families was required at school to fill in his or her “preferred pronouns” on a form.3 Listen, I’ve already let a good dozen plus such examples in our community from the last couple years go unheeded, but I’ve had enough. This is not kindness nor care, but capitulation to an overtly political ideology that will slowly destroy public schooling from the inside-out if allowed to continue. It is nothing short of teaching children to bow the knee to what we are all being asked to believe is a neutral ideology of “no ideology” that is actually blatantly political ideology. It has hit my kids’ schools. It has hit my wife’s job. And I’ve had enough and I am done being quiet about such things. It’s on.

Granted, I am not God’s gift to the world when it comes to intellectual acumen or moral integrity, and I hardly have a platform worthy of it, but I’ve been praying and thinking and struggling with this for years—long before Covid. So in the vein of my earlier “I don’t care what anybody says anymore” rant, and in keeping with such things the Elders have occasionally discussed in recent years about my role, I have decided to write more often and more pointedly in Great Questions Answered so we are regularly learning and modeling a trustworthy and thorough repository of Christian worldview thinking that positions us to be well-trained persuaders for God’s timeless truths in a morally corrupt world that needs them even as it mocks them.5

I refuse to give in to any further pressure to privatize my Christian faith. If the modern secular religion of perverted sexual values gets to have a say in public educational curricula that is funded with public tax money, then so do the boring, traditional, and now countercultural principles from God’s Word that are common grace for the flourishing of all made in God’s image. It’s now clear that a flimsy, ahistorical, and limitless interpretation of the “separation between church and state” has become cover for a political ideology of religious secularism that now brazenly militates against even the simplest moral claims of natural law on which our own constitution was built.

Think about the stakes here. On the one hand is the claim that upending God-given and biological sexual identity is a "freedom" our children should explore apart from oppressive parental influence. This is already being shown not only to increase mental health problems and suicidality, but it also literally physically destroys a child’s ability to reproduce. It has recently resulted in our own—and other—federal agencies warning about gender-reassignment treatments that sometimes produce life-threatening swelling of the brain and permanent blindness.7 This is supposedly good for our children?! On the other hand other is the “boring” and “traditional” sexual values that are now the true “alternative” that actually produces humans and their flourishing. The stats behind these differences are irrefutable and overwhelming, but that’s for another time. And yes, I can and will defend the boring traditional position using logical argumentation and reasoned exegesis in the text of Scripture that make clear that the contemporary progressive hermeneutic of political ideology is flimsy and that God’s Word is best for all humanity! As our Beliefs page on our website8 says, in the preamble to our Confession of Faith, “the Word of God is our Authority and Guide,”
“For us as a church, because God's Word created us, called us, atoned for us, and empowers us to witness to His presence, its inscripturated form is His perfect guide for all truth (Psalm 119:160; Proverbs 1:7; 9:10; Job 28:28), human flourishing (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:15-19; 9:1-7; Matthew 4:4), [and yes, even] cultural values (Genesis 9:6; Exodus 20:1-20; Psalm 75:7; Daniel 2:21; Romans 13:1-7).”
We Christians believe God has redeemed us for the good of our community and for those with whom vehemently disagree. As a contrast to the filth of most modern forums, we are called to be rare exceptions that teach and embody Christlike love of neighbor, even in disagreement. But we cannot embody that goodness and witness to God’s power if we continue to allow the privatization and subjugation of our faith. Becoming comfortable with the spineless tolerance that allows evil is consigning future generations and our own community to terrible suffering and pain. I’m done remaining silent about the world’s terrible ideas and sloppy thinking and I’m doubling down on teaching how God’s Word speaks to all of life. Yes, I will work hard to make actual arguments that are based on principles and that avoid ad hominem, name calling, and conflating of faith and politics, but I’m done being nice to bad ideas. Thus, I plan to kindly eviscerate secular and godless ideologies with principled argumentation, empirical data, well-exegeted Biblical texts, philosophical reasoning, and historical precedent, for the sake of the glory of Christ and His Word as sufficient in all things for all people.

Friends, not only is making persuasive arguments against the upending of God’s created order not hatred, racism, nor conflation of religion and politics, but given the cultural landscape, it is courage to love our community by being clear about what produces human flourishing for all. We have a Savior who models God’s love, through personal sacrifice, for the sake of the entire world knowing His Lordship. We will do the same, embodying—as best God enables—the fullness of His grace and truth. (See John 1:14, where, notice it is not a measured “balance,” but “fullness.”)

So I want to forewarn you that, over time, even here in Greene County, East TN, people around you, in your family, and in your workplaces, may subtly shun or openly ostracize you. As Jesus told us, standing for the basic truths of God’s Word will mean hatred from the world (Psalm 89:50-51; Matthew 5:11-12; John 7:7; 15:18-21; 16:2; Acts 5:41; 2 Corinthians 12:10; 1 Peter 4:12-14; 1 John 3:13; 4:5). Please pray for our witness as a church that refuses to further accommodate the privatizing of our faith in Christ. Pray that our church leaders will live with the purity and integrity of heart and body that keeps us strong and leads in Spirit-filled faith. Pray that our people will daily devote themselves to everyday boring faithfulness that is the fullness of grace and truth. Pray that God blesses our efforts to bring Him glory at a new campus in the South Greene community. What we do here, now, together, as a community of faith, matters—for the health and flourishing of our community and for eternity.

1 And it did! In 12 years of undergraduate and graduate schooling I’ve learned with growing conviction that—as it has for thousands of years—God’s Holy Word can withstand human scrutiny. Go ahead—test it for yourself.

Yes, I know, I write sentences that sometimes require another read as they are… long.

It was an online form that required this particular field to be filled in before being able to submit the form.

4 Public teachers, I’m on your side, despite what the unions say about needing to coalesce against political conservatives like me in order to keep public schooling alive. Secular political ideology—which is not neutral and is religious—is slowly destroying education and sports, and some powerful teachers’ unions function as mouthpieces for such ideologies. It will be over my fired or dead body that it infiltrates this church.

Today’s GQA is the first installment that reflects some of that additional focus. Also, there is quite a bit of new material toward the end of the “Intro to GQA” (fccgreene.org/introtogqa) that also reflects this more pointed focus.

6 See the footnotes in today’s GQA, which is the first installment of my developing thoughts about how churches should respond to the recent US Supreme Court overturn of Roe v Wade. Also, some developing argumentation is happening toward the end of the “Intro to GQA” (fccgreene.org/introtogqa).

FYI, Boston Children's Hospital has begun touting itself as the "first pediatric center in the country dedicated to [providing, sic.] ... a full suite of surgical options for transgender teens and young adults," and has provided 90 videos (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNdnrJ0WHYVaziwFvcHuqgIupMhNa7fKE, most of which are now marked "private," but those that aren't as of early Aug 2022 give plenty of evidence that their goal is to provide procedures like "gender-affirming hysterectomies" for preteen and teenage girls that destroy God's created order. This is just a small sample.
