H7 Story: A Unique Sense of Community

By Jessica Dickerson

As an introvert, I have often found it challenging to initiate conversations with people I am not familiar with. However, I have also noticed a strong desire for community, especially alongside my very extroverted husband.

My husband and I decided to start attending the Schubert Life Group in December 2023. My initial thought was, “What has he gotten us into this time?” I approached it with some anxiety, feeling apprehensive about sharing my thoughts on the sermon and what’s happening in our lives, simply because I wasn’t very familiar with everyone in the group.

To my pleasant surprise, I was met with kindness and vulnerability from the group, which encouraged me to open up. While it was initially intimidating, I ended up enjoying the experience and looking forward to returning. As a newly married couple, we have found it very helpful to be among others who have been married for several years or even decades. We truly appreciate the opportunity to learn from their advice on topics such as parenting, homeschooling, finances, and more. We also value hearing about the challenges they have encountered together. Additionally, we find it encouraging to hear the various perspectives others have gained from the sermon.

Most of all, we sincerely appreciate being part of a small group that feels genuine, honest, and vulnerable, and the good food is certainly a bonus. We have shared not only some exciting news but also some of the more challenging aspects related to family dynamics, work situations, sin struggles, health issues, and other matters. It has truly fulfilled our desire for community.

Life groups are about much more than simply gathering to study the Bible. It involves lending a helping hand when needed, such as borrowing a car while yours is broken down, or starting a meal train for someone experiencing a family loss or recovering from surgery. It’s about the body of Christ intentionally praying for and caring for one another, while doing life together.

If you’re not currently part of a life group, I would strongly encourage you to consider joining one to experience the unique sense of community that comes with a small, Christ-centered setting.
